Personal Reflections on a Coronial Inquest on a Client’s Suicide

BelindaS.L. Khong

LLB (Hons), PhD, MAPS, MCCounP

In 2010, a coronial inquest examined the tragic suicide of TV newsreader, Charmaine Dragun. The case attracted significant publicity. The Coroner made a number of recommendations pertinent to psychologists. These included recommendations on the procedures for assessment and treatment of depression and bipolar disorder, with a goal to reducing the incidence of suicidal behaviour. This case has raised anxiety among practitioners particularly where a discrepancy in diagnosis occurs.

Dr Belinda Khong, one of Charmaine Dragun’s treating health professionals gave evidence at the inquest over three days.  Dr Khong will explore some of the demands of the proceedings at the inquest, and her personal reflections of the experience. She will also discuss some professional implications for psychologists.
