THERAPY
My General Approach to Therapy
My approach to practice is informed by my cultural heritage as an Australian- Chinese and my professional experiences — as a lawyer, psychologist, mindfulness practitioner, educator, and writer. The Humanistic, Existential and Buddhist values of personal and social responsibility, and respect for the uniqueness of each human being have provided an invaluable foundation for my work. I believe that every individual has the capacity to reach his or her potential for well-being. And all of us being an integral part of society, I believe that every individual needs to practice social responsibility.
My professional work is grounded on established psychotherapeutic approaches, and the appropriate blending and combination of ideas and practices from the Humanistic-Existential-Buddhist perspectives. I apply this synthesis in therapy across a range of psychological and mental health issues including depression, anxiety, co-morbidity symptoms, stress-related issues, obsessive-compulsive disorders, PTSD, bipolar disorders, and issues related to self-esteem, personal growth and meaning-of-life, terminal illnesses, death and dying, grief and loss, couples and family therapy, and mindful parenting.
Psychotherapy can do more than just ameliorate mental health issues. I believe that my innovative approach can facilitate clients’ self-reflection and understanding about the nature of human existence and its relationship to personal suffering and motivate clients in taking personal responsibility for their well-being and flourishing beyond therapy. I also lecture at the Department of Psychology, Macquarie University on various courses including personality, adult development, Eastern psychology, mindfulness, and spirituality.
